Preparing for launch

Ready for landing

To make sure everything goes smoothly when it’s time for the measuring equipment to land on Mars, Erich and his team from the Columbia Scientific Balloon Facility are simulating the conditions of a descent into the Martian atmosphere. The first step is to take the NASA landing technology to an altitude of 55 kilometers. It is a delicate job, as Erich explains: “For a perfect ascent into the stratosphere, the payload has to be positioned precisely under a helium balloon and then released at the very right moment.”
