Fascinating Life

Almost Real

By PrimaPágina

Have you ever imagined fighting crime in the shoes of your favorite hero? Or braving space, fighting in interstellar battles? Nowadays this is possible in the universe of virtual reality.

The concept of VR – (virtual reality) has been followed since the 1960’s, explains the computing professor Diogo Cortiz, (PUC-SP). But the models of glasses developed in the past were very expensive, being restricted to universities or military training. “They were also heavy and didn´t have sufficient graphic processing capacity to create something immersive.”

As the years passed, these limitations have been overcome. Today, the glasses have three technologies to offer an experience close to reality. The gyroscopes indicate the direction in which the head is. The accelerometers capture the rotation speed and the sensors — which can be infrared or ultrasonic — they detect the movements made by the player.

Consequently, the bonds which the user creates with the characters are much more intense, opening the possibility of exploring emotions as fear, happiness and sadness in a way never experienced before in the world of games.

Bosch is one of the leading supplier of sensors in the world. The accelerometers and gyroscopes produced by the company are present in a series of daily situations. The accelerometers, for example, aid in reorienting the smartphon`s screen when the appliance is placed in the horizontal position.

Almost Real

A technology which is already near you

Game consoles are part of the daily life of many people. Soccer, dance, tennis and countless games use movement detection. Clearly, many applications of games use sensors MEMS (Microelectromechanical Systems), e.g. acceleration sensors to detect movements to improve the user’s game experience. Detecting the user’s particular movement is converted into an interface based upon movement for a game. This opens a world of opportunities for simpler and more interactive user interfaces

MEMS are essential components in a connected world. Measuring only a few millimeters, they contain delicate microscopic structures made of silicon.

The sensors use these structures to measure acceleration, air pressure, geomagnetic field, sound, yaw rate, temperature, humidity and quality of the air. Objects which do not have their own electronic components, as doors or windows, can be equipped with a tiny and efficient radio interface, besides a small battery, so that they can record the environment and become part of the Internet of Things.
